When people see me, and they see the multitude of tmnt merch that I own, I'm sure they wonder what an adult woman is doing practically dedicating her life to what most people would think of as a children's tv show. But what they don't know is that there is in fact a very good reason for me to have been obsessed with the 2012 series since middle school. In 7th grade, my friend Veronica had been watching the show and she talked about it every chance she got. I couldn't understand what had gotten her so invested in a show, but I still held off on giving it a chance until one day when there was nothing good on tv so I switched it to Nickelodeon and gave it a try. I truly believe that was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. I had to catch up on it! Almost all of the first season had already aired at that point, so I was busy the entirety of the next week just binge watching it. I think I ended up way more invested in the show than Veronica did.
Anyway, 8th grade was a very hard year for my friend group; it was the time where many of my friends started to have symptoms of depression. We started to grow apart. And recently I remembered this and I thought "hey...why didn't I ever have a depression spell in middle school like everyone else did?" But earlier that year in the summer I had found this show that for some reason made me tremendously happy all the time. So what I'm trying to say is, I truly believe that tmnt prevented me from going through depression at a young age. And the reason I have so much merch, and why I draw them, and read about them, etc, is because I am so grateful. I'm grateful for how the show has helped me and how it still helps me. We all have times where we feel down, and the way I cope is by watching the show that made me so happy that I forgot what depression was.
My friend group is fine now, by the way. Even though we're all in college now, we still hang out all the time, and I couldn't be happier about that.
Thanks for letting me tell you my story <3
And don't let anyone tell you you're too old to watch cartoons!
